About Us
From Webster Elementary, to Washington Middle, to East High, the Green Bay Area Public School District’s Fine Arts strand offers students the unique opportunity to build and hone their skills in all aspects of the arts from kindergarten through senior year of high school. Several serious research studies have shown the positive impact the arts have on academic success. Creativity, imagination, and innovation are highly desired skills in many professional and technical career fields. Armed with this knowledge, the Fine Arts Institute at East High School was launched in the 2011-12 school year.

The components of the Institute are as follows:

Music

Fine Arts Institute students study under master teachers and artists, receive private instruction, develop an artistic portfolio, and earn academic credit for their private and independent study in the arts. To build their skills and confidence, students will take a total of 27 private music lessons each year that are provided by master musician teachers. These lessons are 30 minutes in length and provide expert teaching that supports development in ability, technique and artistry.

Courses required for Institute music students include: basic music theory, AP music theory, comparative arts, and ensemble that coincides with the student’s instrumental or vocal emphasis, such as band, choir, or orchestra.

Visual Arts

Students in the visual arts strand of the Fine Arts Institute have the opportunity to learn and explore new art forms and advanced techniques. For the 2022-23 academic year, we are excited to partner with the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, featuring artist-in-residence Kobe Elixon. This special program will meet once per week after school in the East High Art Department. Institute artists will participate in a unique curriculum designed for Fine Arts Institute students.

Courses required for Institute art students include: design and mixed media, comparative arts, and students must take an art class two of three trimesters.

Literary Arts

The Literary Arts Strand of the Fine Arts Institute celebrates the art of writing as a powerful tool for growth and change both within the writer and the world. Students in the program are encouraged to write in the genres of their choosing, including fiction poetry, playwriting, screenwriting, and creative nonfiction as well as in any number of sub-genres. Writers in the program design a plan of study which includes completion of writing packets, reading to analyze craft and a final creative project. Students also participate in bi-weekly writers’ workshops based on the workshop format of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Finally, the students publish their work in “The Strand,” the Fine Arts Institute Literary Arts Strand magazine.

Students develop their personal creative process that is centered around the theatre!

Dance

The dance strand is the latest addition to the Fine Arts Institute and is bringing the excitement! From beginner to pre-professional, our dance students will expand their boundaries, develop technique and versatility while exploring dance genres. The season will culminate with a spring dance showcase that will feature student dancers and celebrate this form of artistic expression.

Students interested in attending the Fine Arts Institute at East High are required to submit an application, which includes a student essay, recommendations, a statement of commitment, an audition for music and theatre students, samples of work, and more. Scholarships are also available for music students.

As studies have shown, these students will have an advantage in post-secondary education. According to a study from the National Endowment for the Arts, students who had intensive arts experiences in high school were three times more likely than students who lacked those experiences to earn a bachelor’s degree.
